Abstract

1,079,557. Laminating. J. A. DEKKER. Dec. 7, 1965 [April 8, 1965], No. 14929/65. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B8] A process for preparing a paper laminate comprises sandwiching particles or granules of a synthetic plastics material capable of flowing under heat and pressure between two sheets of paper, and applying heat and pressure to the sandwich so that the plastics material flows, and the particles or granules form a coherent layer between the paper sheets, which layer is self-adhering to the paper sheets, at least one surface of one of the paper sheets being treated so as to cause the particles or granules to adhere thereto prior to forming the sand. wich. In apparatus for performing the process a sheet of paper 13 is unwound from a roll 11, passes between nip rollers 14, 15 and is treated by wetting one of its faces with water applied by a grooved or serrated roller 16. The sheet then passes wetted face uppermost beneath a hopper 22 from which particles or granules 23 are deposited on it, and is fed between rollers 29, 30 together with a second sheet of paper 26 from a roll 24 to form a sandwich. The sandwich is fed between heated pressure plates 31, 32 which are operated intermittently to form the laminate by causing the plastics particles or granules to flow into a coherent layer. If it is desired to form a corrugated laminate the surfaces of the pressure plates 31, 32 are made undulatory. The plastics material used may be polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride but is preferably polystyrene in which case the operating temperature of the pressure plates is 105-130‹ C., preferably 108‹ C., and the operating pressure is 0À1 to 0À5 kilograms/cm.<SP>2</SP>. The pressure plates may be heated by steam under pressure, electricity, or by gas flames. In a modification the sheet 13 is treated on both surfaces by drawing it through a water bath. The pressure plates 31, 32 may be replaced by heated rollers to give continuous operation, and the sandwich may be heated by high-frequency heating before being pressed. In order to prevent particles or granules from dropping off the sheet 13 it is made slightly narrower than the sheet 26, the edges of this latter sheet then being bent downwardly perpendicular to the general plane of the sheet by a framework placed across the sheet. To ensure the desired density of particles or granules being supplied from the hopper it is provided with an adjustable baffle. The completed paper laminate can be used as wrapping material, or as ceiling or wall board, or as an insulating panel.
