Abstract

1,079,485. Parachutes. PIONEER PARACHUTE CO. Inc. April 1, 1966, No. 14657/66. Heading B7G. A parachute intended to be capable of gliding a horizontal distance at least equal to the altitude at which it is deployed has a canopy 2 provided with a front portion (not visible in the rear view of Fig. 4) formed from solid gores over which attached air flow is established during deployment, side portions 20 formed with rearwardly directed exhaust vents 24 between the edges of some gores and a rear portion 34 formed with one or more rearwardlydirected slots or openings 38 whereby air from the interior of the canopy may pass rearwardly through vents 24 and openings 38 to exert a forwardly-directed reaction force on the canopy. To stabilize the parachute during descent the side portions 20 are extended downwardly by panels 44 and to increase rearward airflow the rear panel may be cut away as shown at 40. The side vents 24 may be provided with control cords 32 which may be operated by the parachutist or by control mechanism to enable the parachute to be controlled in descent. A control cord may be attached to the peak 6 to enable it to be drawn inward during descent.
