Abstract

1,079,394. Machine tool details. J. REX. Nov. 27, 1964 [Nov. 29, 1963], No. 48206/64. Headings B3B and B3C. [Also in Division B4] A drilling, tapping &c. machine comprises a vertical column 1, Fig. 1, on a fixed base 2, a work-table 3, and a tool head 4 which may have a multi-spindle head 5 secured thereto. Head 4 is moved vertically by a worm and wheel drive 6 driven by a motor 11 through a changespeed box 7, or alternatively by a hand wheel 10. Tool spindle 12 is driven by a motor 8 through a second change-speed box. Table 3 is secured to a bar 18, Figs. 2 and 4, slidable on column 1 and head 4 is adjustable on the bar by a pawl 22, and a pin 20 which engages apertures 19 in the bar, the pin being actuated by a handle 21. Head 4 has ball or roller bearings 24, Fig. 5, which are in contact with lubricated strips 25, 26 on oolumn 1, and each bearing comprises a body 27, Fig. 6-8, on one member and two semi-circular ends 28 on the other means. Each bearing 24 is applied directly in a groove (33) in the head 4, Fig. 9 (not shown). In a modification, a pin (35), and a wedge (34), adjustable by a screw 36, is provided, Fig. 10 (not shown). In a further modification the bearing is adjusted by an eccentric (37), Fig. 11. In another modification a wedge (34) without a pin is provided, Fig. 12 (not shown) or the bearing has a tapered face, Fig. 14 (not shown). In yet another modification the groove (33) and the bearing have tapered faces, Fig. 13 (not shown). In a final modification the bearing is adjusted by a bolt (39), Fig. 12 (not shown). Table 3 is also guided on column 1 by bearings 40, 41, Fig. 16, and locked by clamps 42, the bearings being similar to bearings 24. Table 3 may be replaced by superposed tables, 66, 67, Figs. 20, 21, the latter being slidable on a base 68, which is slidable on column 1. Table 66 is displaced by a screw and nut 69, driven by a hand wheel 72, or by a reversible motor 73 through a change-speed box 74 and an adjustable torque limiting clutch. The position of the table can be determined by an optical device 79, Fig. 20, used in co-operation with a scale 80. Table 67 is displaced by a hand wheel and screw 85, 81, Fig. 21, or by an hydraulic cylinder (89). Table 66 is locked to table 67 and table 67 to base 68, by clamps 107 each of which is actuated by a piston 96 supplied with fluid through inlets 100, 101, Fig. 25. A wedge 103 supports strip 25 during clamping, and a rod 106 is interposed between the wedge and piston (96). In operation, fluid is admitted by inlet 100, wedge 103 is urged to the right by spring 105, to support strip 25, pin 112 lifts the back end of the clamp, and the front end of the latter clamps strip 25. Head 4 is locked to column 1, Fig. 3a, by a wedge 114 which acts against a member 120 which co-operates with a cam 117a, formed on a bolt 117 which is manually actuated. In a modification, the machine comprises a rotatable table 121, Figs. 28, 29, carried on a sliding table 124. Table 121 is rotated by a worm and wheel 126, 127, actuated by a hand wheel, or by a motor and changespeed box. The machine is provided with means for automatically providing rapid advance of the tool head, a working feed, and rapid retraction. Tool spindle 12 carries a fixed sleeve 44, Fig. 17, and a sleeve 45, slidable in sleeve 44 but connected to the latter by bayonet joint 47, 48. A member 49 is driven by sleeve 44 through balls 50, but is slidable on the sleeve. Sleeve 45 has an end flange, formed with skewed teeth 55a, which co-operate with similar teeth on the end of member 49. A nut 57 is screwed on to member 49, and carries spring-urged pins 58, which urge sleeve 45 downwardly so that pin 47 engages the end of slot 48. A lever 59 engages the flange of sleeve 45, and controls a micro contact in the control circuit of the machine, in such a manner as to stop rapid advance, and to initiate the working feed, of the tool head. A second lever 63 is provided to stop the working feed, and to initiate the rapid retraction of the head. The drill head moves quickly until the drill contacts the work, sleeve 45 is moved into sleeve 44, lever 59 is actuated, and the working feed commences. Teeth 55a, 49a engage and the drill is rotated until a predetermined resistance is reached, whereupon the teeth rotate slightly relative to each other. Member 49 retracts, and lever 63 stops the working feed, and initiates the rapid retraction.
