Abstract

[Also in Division G1] The level of a conductive liquid 2, Fig. 1a in a container 1 is measured by the losses which it produces in the coupling between a primary winding 11 and a secondary winding 4, the secondary current being measured at 6, and there being a core member arranged between the two windings in the form of a plurality of part circular soft iron segments 8, 9. The segments 8, 9 may be semi-circular or other fractions of a circle, and together with the windings they effectively constitute a transformer. The primary 11 may be situated outside the vessel 1, which is of stainless steel, the secondary 4 being wound on a soft iron core 5 and protected from the liquid by a stainless steel tube 3. Alternatively, the primary may be immersed in the liquid, (Fig. 2, not shown), and protected from it by a stainless steel casing (9) which carries the segments (8, 9). The windings carry ceramic beads for insulation at high temperatures, when for example, molten metal is being measured. A thermistor 12, Fig. 1a, may be included in the primary or secondary circuit to compensate for temperature variations.
