Abstract

A method for mechanically tying a binding around the skin of a sausage or the like comprises the steps of arranging a section of binding strand in a looped configuration with the section ends in crossed relationship to define an outer vertex and an inner vertex at the cross-over point, wrapping the looped section around the portion of the sausage skin or the like to be constricted during the binding operation, passing the looped end of the section through the outer vertex around the cross-over point and back through the inner vertex to form a knot, and tightening said knot by drawing said loop and crossed-over section ends away from each other to effect said constriction while at the same time leaving said loop available for use as a suspension means. A suitable apparatus comprises two opposed pairs of strand anchoring means (11, 10), the anchoring means of each pair being in mutually spaced side by side relationship and the pairs being mounted so that the first pair of anchoring means are pivotable and the second pair of anchoring means are capable of reciprocable movement towards and away from said first pair, means for supporting a sausage or the like, the skin of which is to be tied, feed means (8) for looping section of binding strand, forming part of a strand length, around said two opposed pairs of anchoring means so that four corners of the looped strand section are anchored thereby and the section ends are crossed over between the first pair of spaced anchoring means to define outer and inner vertices at the cross-over point, clamping means associated with said first pair of anchoring means clamping the crossed-over section ends, means for displacing the second pair of anchoring means towards the first pair of anchoring means to wrap the looped strand section around the skin to be tied and to pass the looped end of the section through said outer vertex, a needle (25) associated with said second pair of anchoring means and displaceable relative thereto to pick up the looped end of the section from the second pair of anchoring means and draw said looped section end around the cross-over point back through the inner vertex thereby knotting and tightening the looped section around the skin, and means (22) for severing the knotted loop section from the strand length.
