Abstract

Grease compositions comprise a major amount of a lubricating oil and a minor amount of mixed alkali metal salts of (a) C2-4 fatty acid, (b) C9-16 aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or alkyl polynuclear aryl dicarboxylic acid, and (c) C12-24 fatty acid, the molar hydrogen equivalent ratio of (a) : (b) being from 1 to 10 : 1, and that of (c) : (b) being from 1 to 4 : 1. The dicarboxylic acid may be formed in situ by hydrolysis of a dinitrile. The alkali metal of the salts is usually lithium and/or sodium, and some calcium salt may be present in addition. Typical acids from which the mixed salts are formed are (a) acetic acid, (b) azelaic acid, dodecane-1,12-dioic acid, and a di-acid of formula <FORM:1076845/C4-C5/1> and (c) hydroxy-stearic acid, commercial isooleic acid (mainly elaidic acid), and commercial "Hydrofol" acids. The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic, e.g. di(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, the C13 oxo diester of tetraethylene glycol, the complex ester formed from sebacic acid/tetraethylene glycol/2-ethylhexanoic acid in the molar ratio 1/2/2, a halohydrocarbon oil, an alkyl silicate, a sulphite ester, a mercaptal, a formal, or a polyglycol-type oil. The following optional additives may also be present: an alkali metal phosphate (e.g. tri- Na, K or Li-orthophosphate, sodium pyrophosphate, and sodium tripolyphosphate) which may be produced in situ and may be coated with a salt of an amino-imidazoline and phytic acid or an inorganic acid, dinitriles having a total of 10-32 carbon atoms (e.g. dodecanedioic dinitrile), calcium petroleum sulphonate, phenylalpha-naphthylamine, sorbitan mono-oleate, and sodium nitrite. The greases are suitable for lubricating antifriction bearings, and are of the channelling type.ALSO:Trisodium phosphate coated with a salt of an amino imidazoline and phytic acid or an inorganic acid is formed by crystallizing the phosphate from aqueous solution in the presence of mineral oil containing the imidazoline salt.ALSO:Dodecanedioic dinitrile is prepared by re-acting dodecanedioic acid with ammonia in the presence of concentrated phosphoric acid.
