Abstract

<PICT:1076456/C6-C7/1> Molten metal, particularly steel, is treated while flowing through a chamber by introducing the melt to be treated, e.g. from a ladle 1 provided with a stopper 27, through an inlet 17 into the chamber 10, dividing it into two portions one providing a marginal flow along the chamber wall and the other a central stream spaced from the marginal flow both towards the chamber outlet 18, introducing refining materials such as deoxidizing and degassing agents into the central stream prior to it reaching the outlet e.g. feeding magnesium wire 8 by rollers 7 through openings 9 on one side of the chamber and injecting a mixture of CCl4 and TiCl4 (to give a TiC addition to the melt) through a nozzle 26 on the other side from a container 6 by means of pressurized gas in steel container 23, to cause the melt to be atomized and thrown against the portion flowing along the chamber wall for admixture therewith, and withdrawing the mixed portions through the outlet 18. The dividing is preferably effected by a frustoconical body 14 placed in the upper section of the chamber and having passages 16 for the marginal flow and a bore 15 coaxial with the inlet 17 for the central stream. The passages 16 may define a spiral path for imparting a twist to the melt. Below the main treatment chamber 10 a second chamber 11 may be provided interconnected therewith via the outlet 18 into which further alloying material may be introduced through an opening 28, e.g. granulated CaSi 19 fed in from a container 4 by a conveyer worm 5. The lower portion of the chamber 11 may be restricted by a closure body 21 for accumulating the melt prior to discharge through outlet 24 which may be surrounded by a cylindrical body 34 immersed in the melt of the collecting ladle 2 for the protection thereof. Other halides may be used as the refining agent, e.g. NbCl5, introduced through the nozzle 26, and the CaSi fed through the conveyer worm 5 may additionally contain sodium borate and lime. Gases used in the treatment may include A, He or N2.
