Abstract

1,076,441. Photo-electric pyrometers. H. INABA AND I. NAKAKUBO. July 2, 1964 [July 2, 1963], No. 27348/64. Heading G1A. Apparatus for measuring the temperature of a body comprises a photo detector receiving radiation from the body and a reference radiator to generate first and second signals respectively, means responsive to the difference between the first and second signals to indicate the temperature of the body and means responsive to the second signal to adjust the sensitivity of the photo detector. Light from the body 10 and the reference lamp 42 are chopped out of phase and fall on a photo-electric detector 32. A square aperture 34 is located near the lens 28 so that the measurement becomes independent of the distance from the body 10 to the lens 28. The detector output is fed to a circuit 64 which separates the signals S 1 , S2 due to the light from body 10 and lamp 42. The difference between S 1 and S 2 , which corresponds to the deviation of the temperature of body 10 from that of lamp 42 is indicated on a meter 68. The temperature of lamp 42 may be set manually by a potentiometer 46 and the set value is shown on a meter 50. The signal S 2 corresponding to the reference lamp is fed back to a circuit 72 which controls the sensitivity of the detector 32 to keep S 2 substantially constant. The pyrometer may be applied to the control of heat treating of machine parts, in which case a filter 30 is inserted to limit the radiation used to that of wavelength greater than 6000A. Typically the speed with which a flame ring moves along a machine roll being hardened may be controlled by the output of the pyrometer.
