Abstract

A display device comprises two translucent plates 3, 4 on which translucent coloured symbols 6, 7 are printed. Symbol 6 can normally be seen by reflected light but when illuminated by a rear light source 8 it is rendered invisible by providing on a coloured plate 5, the colour and density of which corresponds to that of symbol 6, an uncoloured symbol 51 which is the exact complement of symbol 6. Thus when plates 3, 4, 5 are illuminated from the rear, symbol 7 becomes exclusively visible. The state of an electric circuit may be indicated by displaying the operating condition of a relay, the symbol 6 representing the relay in its state of reset. The symbol 7 is an imprint of the circuit in its operative condition. A light source at the rear of the device is connected in shunt to the exciting winding of the relay. The plates 3, 4, 5 may be replaced by a single plate on which the necessary printed patterns are applied to the front and rear face.
