Abstract

A carrier for a catalyst comprises a calcined mixture of a porous siliceous material with additions of 1 to 10% by weight of TiO2 and 1-10% by weight of bentonite clay, predominantly consisting of montmorillonite, based on the total weight of the dry components present in the carrier, the resultant total content of iron and aluminium oxides being less than 8% by weight of the carrier. To achieve the desired content of iron and iron oxides in the calcined mixture, the porous siliceous material may be pre-treated with mineral acid. The porous siliceous material may be diatomaceous earth, diatomite or kieselguhr. The bentonite clay may contain 50-60% SiO2 and 11-22% Al2O3. missing page 8ALSO:Alcohols are obtained by the catalytic hydration of olefines, wherein a gaseous mixture of steam and the olefine, e.g. ethylene, is passed over a catalyst consisting of phosphoric acid absorbed on a carrier. The carrier comprises a calcined mixture of a porous siliceous material with additions of 1-10% by weight of TiO2 and 1-10% by wt. of bentonite clay, predominantly consisting of montmorillonite, based on the total weight of the dry components present in the carrier, the resultant total content of iron and aluminium oxides being less than 8% by wt. of the carrier. The desired content of iron and iron oxides in the calcined mixture can be achieved by pre-treating the porous siliceous material with mineral acid. The porous siliceous material may be diatomaceous earth, diatomite or kieselguhr. The bentonite clay may contain 50-60% SiO2 and 11-22% Al2O3.ALSO:A hydration catalyst comprises orthophosphoric acid absorbed on a carrier, which carrier comprises a calcined mixture of a porous siliceous material with additions of 1 to 10% by wt. of TiO2 and 1-10% by weight of bentonite clay, predominantly consisting of montmorillonite, based on the total weight of the dry components present in the carrier, the resultant total content of iron and aluminium oxides being less than 8% by weight of the carrier. To achieve the desired content of iron and iron oxide in the calcined mixture, the porous siliceous material may be pre-treated with mineral acid. The porous siliceous material may be diatomaceous earth, diatomite or kieselguhr. The bentonite clay may contain 50-60% SiO2 and 11-22% Al2O3.
