Abstract
A magnesium base alloy comprises:- Rare Earth metals 0.2 - 4% Zn O - less than 0.25% Zr 0.3 - 1% H at least 50 ccs per 100 gms of the alloy. optionally one or more of the following elements:- Ag up to 8% Cd up to 5% Li up to 6% Ca up to 1% Ga up to 2% In up to 5% Ti up to 5% Pb up to 1% Cu up to 0.25% Bi up to 1% Th up to 3% Fe up to 0.1% Be up to 0.05% the balance being magnesium in an amount of at least 80%. The alloy may be heat treated at from 150 DEG C. to near the solidus (e.g. at least 450 DEG C. for the hydriding step and precipitation hardening at up to 250 DEG C.). The hydriding step may be performed in a hydrogen atmosphere, ammonia, hydrocarbon gases, or in a molten salt bath provided with hydrogen (e.g. by the addition of hydroxides or hydrides or by an electrolytic process).
