Abstract

Articles of a steel which is age-hardenable in the martensitic state are solution treated, cooled to retain the solution thus formed, and then subjected to a localized ageing treatment whereby different hardness levels are developed in different zones of the article. This may be achieved by differential ageing of the zones, by overageing or underageing those zones to have a lower hardness, or by overageing or underageing the whole article and subsequently resolution treating and ageing the zones to have higher hardness. The invention may be applied to the steels disclosed in Specifications 936,557, 948,354 and 948,355, and is stated to be particularly relevant to the treatment of gears, metal working equipment, gun barrels and armour plate. Heating may be by fluidized bed molten metal, molten salt, flame resistance or induction heating.
