Abstract
1,074,304. Coated sheet material. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. Aug. 19, 1964 [Aug. 22, 1963], No. 33972/64. Heading B2E. [Also in Division B5] A gas- and moisture-permeable synthetic leather comprises a laminated structure of a continuous foamed layer of open cell structure having a volume porosity of 40 to 95% and an open-pored sintered layer having a volume porosity of 5 to 40% of polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer derived mainly from vinyl chloride monomer, or a mixture of the polymers, on woven, non-woven or knitted cloth or paper. The synthetic leather may be produced (i) by applying a plastisol of the polymer or polymers containing a foaming agent capable of generating gas at a temperature between 90 and 180C. to the surface of a woven or non- woven cloth or paper, applying a powder layer by uniformly spreading a powder mixture of the polymer or polymers which is capable of sintering at a temperature below 220C., and then heat-treating the laminate at a temperature between 160 and 220C. at atmospheric pressure to allow the powder and plastisol simultaneously to sinter and foam respectively, or (ii) adhering a gas- and moisture-permeable sheet or film of the polymer or polymers, which has an open-pore sintered structure having a volume porosity of 5 to 40%, to woven or non- woven cloth or paper, by using as binder a plastisol of the polymer or polymers containing a foaming agent capable of generating gas at a temperature between 90 and 180C., and then heat-treating at a temperature between 130 and 200C. thereby allowing the plastisol to foam. The foaming agent may be p,p oxybis benzene sulphonyl hydrazide, azodicarbonamide, N.N'-dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine, diazoamino benzene, diphenyl sulphon-3, 3'- disulphohydrazide, 4,4'-diphenyl disulphonyl azide or N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dinitroso terephthalamide. The plastisol may be applied to the surface or desired parts of the surface using a knife, reverse roll or printer, or by transfer from a metal plate or heat-resisting paper. The powder may be applied by a knife, buffer plate or by electrostatic spraying. The heat treatment may be conducted when the surface of the powder layer is exposed, or when the surface is in contact with a porous metal plate having an engraved pattern. As shown in Figure 1, sintered layer 1, intermixed layer 2, and foamed layer 3 are applied over the whole surface of cloth layer 4. In Figure 2, foamed and thus intermediate layers 3, 2, is applied to part of cloth surface 4 and sintered layer I applied thereover.
