A device for forming wire staples in a stapling machine e.g. forming part of a rotary printing press comprises a disc 13 having at least one cutting blade 14 and mounted on a rotary shaft 9 which is driven by gearing 10, 11 from a stapling cylinder 4 and a disc 24 for engagement in a recess formed in a rotatable stapling plunger 23 in order to bend the staple which is prevented from jamming in the disc by means of a stripper. The blade 14 is adapted to cooperate with a cutting nozzle 18 mounted in a holder 19 secured to a support 8, the wire being fed through the nozzle by means of rollers 17 from a supply reel 16. In operation, upon rotation of the stapling cylinder 4, the disc 13 begins to rotate until, at the position shown in Fig. 2, a length of wire is cut off and conveyed, between a leaf spring 21 and a guide 22. On passing the disc 24 the length of wire is formed into a staple and retained, by its own resilience, in grooves 27 formed in the recess in the plunger 23 until it reaches the position wherein the plunger is moved to drive the staple through the material to be stapled and clench over the legs.
