Abstract

1,073,572. Making bags. DELAMERE & WILLIAMS CO. Ltd. Aug. 21, 1964, No. 34338/64. Heading B5D. A bag-making machine having sealing apparatus produces longitudinally spaced seals in a continuously moving strip of bag-forming material, the sealing apparatus comprising a pair of opposed conveyer means each of which has longitudinally spaced sealing elements arranged to co-operate with corresponding sealing elements on the other conveyer means and means for effecting an increase and a decrease in the pitch of the sealing elements. Heat sealable material is fed from a roll 12 under a shaping member 30 where it is formed into a U-shaped strip, between rollers, 36, 38, and then between opposed continuously travelling conveyer chains 44, 46, having electrically heated sealing bars, 40, 42, which grip and withdraw the material from the roll and also seal together the side walls of the strip along spaced transverse zones. The chains 44, 46 are separated from each other under the action of a spring when the machine is stopped to permit threading the leading edge of the strip, while on starting the machine an air cylinder and piston rod overcome the spring and move the two conveyers along transverse rods towards each other. The conveyer chains comprise expansion links between the sealing bars and are expanded and contracted between adjustable stops by the action of a compressed-air device and springs which vary the distance between shafts 62, 66 and 70, 74 connected to sprockets 60, 64, 68, 72 driving the conveyer chains. In operation printed areas on the strip are fed past a photo-electric cell 208 controlled by a pair of contacts which are closed once during each individual sealing operation. With the chains in the contracted position the sealing bars are a little closer to each other than the spacing between printed areas on the strip, so that eventually the cell 208 detects the trailing edge of a printed area on the strip and then operates the air device to stretch the conveyers, the air device being kept in operation for a fixed time by a delay. When the conveyers are stretched the sealing bars are spaced a little further apart than printed areas on the strip which thus " advance " to become clear of the photoelectric cell by the end of the fixed time at which the conveyers are contracted. In this way registration of the sealed portions with the spaces between the printed areas is maintained and production tolerances in the spacing between the printing are accommodated.
