Abstract

1,073,390. Printing and embossing on curved surfaces. J. R. BRANDELL. Sept. 20, 1965 [Oct. 5, 1964], No. 40065/65. Headings B6C and B6J. Apparatus for marking a golf-ball B comprises a pocket 11, having a well portion 70 forming an abutment for the ball, and a slidable member 4 carrying at its forward end a removable type head carrying removable types 66. The slide member 4 is urged rearwardly by spring 39, so that an inner wall thereof 27, Figs. 6, 7, 8 (not shown), abuts a cam (not shown) on the spindle 41. The latter is rotatable by the handle 40, so that in the middle position the cam allows the printing head to be retracted, and when rotated in one direction the cam causes the print head to protrude well into the pocket to facilitate its removal, and when rotated in the other direction causes a more limited movement of the print head into the pocket to press the type face on to the surface of a golf-ball through an intervening sheet of inked paper S. The pressure applied is sufficient to indent the markings into the golf-ball which is subsequently coated with clear acrylic lacquer.
