Abstract
1,073,235. Semi-conductor devices. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 25, 1963], No. 30779/64. Heading H1K. [Also in Division G1] A device for determining its position with respect to a magnetic field periodic in space, e.g. a recorded strip 1, comprises a row of equally spaced Hall generators 3 having their Hall voltage outputs connected in series and each having a separate control current supply. As shown in Fig. 1, the Hall generators are integral and may be formed from a semi-conductor layer by contour etching and are mounted on a wafer 2 of ferrite or a non-magnetic ceramic. The control currents of neighbouring generators are arranged to flow in opposite directions so that the output voltage is an approximately sinusoidal function of the displacement of the device, which displacement may be measured by counting zero points. In Fig. 2 (not shown), two devices (4, 5) are arranged 90 degrees out of phase with respect to the recorded strip. The combination gives an output voltage phase sensitive to the displacement of the devices and which may be used to determine their position within a fraction of a wavelength of the magnetic recording. The semi-conductor layer may extend to the edge of the wafer 2 enabling connections to be soldered at right angles to the plane of the wafer.
