Abstract

1,073,170. Electric selective signalling. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 19, 1965 [Nov. 9, 1964; April 28, 1965], Nos. 45584/64 and 17860/65. Heading G4H. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for measuring the length and/or speed of moving elongate material 2 comprises a flash tube 8 for flashing at predetermined position a phosphorescent material on said moving material to produce an accurately located luminous mark, a photo-electric detector 9 for detecting such mark at a position spaced beyond the marking position in the direction of movement by a distance representing a unit of length, and means responsive to each detection of a mark for causing the marking device to apply another mark whereby successive marks are spaced by such unit of length. The length is measured by counting the number of marks, the material being stopped when a predetermined number is reached. The speed is measured by timing the interval between marks.
