In a vertical slat louvre blind as described below and adapted to traverse a window horizontally, the ends of the louvres 22 are releasably fastened directly to resilient means 78 which in their turn are each supported on the end of a stem 71 extending from a carrier 43, Fig. 4, each stem 71 having a slot 74 to receive the spring means 78 which are accommodated in a hem or loop of the louvre and are held by a curved portion 89 pressed home in a concave end of the slot 74. The carriers 43 run on horizontal runways 33, Fig. 4, and are interconnected by a lazy tong mechanism 49, Fig. 3, which imparts to them relative movement independently of the drive gear rod 44. This rod 44 extends through all the carriers and is connected to the stems 71 supporting the louvres, through one set of teeth 63 on a respective horizontal rack and pinion 69 on the stem 71 meshing with another set of teeth on the rack. The rod 44 is driven from a cord-operated wheel 93 through a type of pawl and ratchet mechanism which rotates the rod intermittently at a slower rate than that of the wheel. The said mechanism comprises an excentric 126, Fig. 19 on an extension 119 of the rod which operates on a disc 128 having a stop arm 129. To cause this disc to oscillate and shoulders 132 on the disc cooperate with teeth on a disc 134 secured to the extension rod 119 and a plate on the rod 119 limits the rotation in clockwise and anticlockwise direction to 180‹. and hence the limitation of rotation of the louvres. The spacing of the louvres is effected by horizontal cords 99b (Fig. 4) passing around end pulleys such as 102 and through bores 67 in the carriers 43 which are carried along by the cords by suitably placed knots or buttons &c, so that the top and bottom paired carriers move together to close up or separate the louver carriers. The end carriers near the joints may be detachably secured to the window frame so that the whole louvre system may be moved.
