Abstract

A rocket motor casing (10) Figs. 1 to 4 (not shown) is made by winding resin-impregnated glass fibres on a mandrel with the fibres lying substantially in the meridional direction, the casing including at least one head portion which is a surface of revolution such that at any point on the surface the radius of curvature in the meridian plane is half the radius of curvature in a plane perpendicular to that plane. This head contour subjects the meridionally wound fibres to little or no hoop stress so that the thickness of the fibre layers can be reduced. The casing (10) comprises two head portions (12) separated by a cylindrical portion (14), one head portion being provided with an apertured boss (25). To construct the casing a mandrel (26) of the required shape is first made, preferably from a liquid soluble material, e.g. salt. Sections of uncured neoprene or other suitable materials are then laid on the mandrel and cured to form a gas-tight liner. The mandrel is then rotated slowly as the resinimpregnated fibres (24) are wound on to it in a substantially meridional direction until the required thickness is obtained. The fibres are then cured before dissolving out the mandrel. Additional hoop wound fibres (28) may be wound on the cylindrical portion.
