Abstract

A coating or impregnating composition, having a total solids content of at least 8% by weight, comprises an aqueous medium having dispersed therein a water-insoluble addition polymer and a wax, the proportions of polymer and wax being 40 to 95 parts by weight of polymer to 5 to 60 parts by weight of wax; said aqueous medium also containing from 0 to 50% by weight (based on the weight of polymer), of an alkali soluble resin; a dispersing agent; and, dissolved in said aqueous medium, a water-soluble calcium or magnesium compound providing in said medium at least 0.5% by weight based on the weight of the polymer, of calcium and/or magnesium ions. Long lists of suitable monomers are given. Copolymers exemplified are: ethyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate / methacrylic acid; ethyl acrylate/styrene / methyl methacrylate / methacrylic acid; ethyl acrylate / styrene / methacrylic acid; methyl acrylate / vinyltoluene / acrylic acid; 2 - ethylhexyl acrylate / styrene / itaconic acid; ethyl acrylate / methyl methacrylate / dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate; 2 - ethylhexyl acrylate / styrene / dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate; ethyl acrylate/vinyl acetate / 4 - vinylpyridine; n - butyl acrylate / methyl methacrylate / b - aminoethyl vinyl ether; vinylidene chloride/ethyl acrylate/vinyl toluene / N - (dibutylaminoethyl) - methacrylamide; methyl acrylate / methyl methacrylate / vinyltoluene / b - dimethylaminoethyl vinyl sulphide; ethyl acrylate / acrylonitrile/methyl methacrylate / t. - butylaminoethyl methacrylate; and a blend of the copolymers ethyl acrylate/ethyl methacrylate/2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine and butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/2-vinylpyridine. Calcium and magnesium compounds exemplified are calcium chloride, acetate and hydroxide, and magnesium chloride and acetate. The above copolymers, in the form of emulsions produced by conventional emulsion polymerization, are blended with a wax emulsion comprising oleic acid, morpholine and either polyethylene wax or carnauba wax, together with an ammonia-soluble alkyd resin, plasticizers and surface-active agents to form floor polishes to each of which is added one of the calcium or magnesium compounds specified above. The polishes are applied to vinyl, rubber and asphalt floor tiles. Many other surfaces, to which the compositions may be applied, are specified. Conventional dyes, pigments and fillers may be incorporated in the compositions.ALSO:A coating or impregnating composition, having a total solids content of at least 8% by weight, comprises an aqueous medium having dispersed therein a water-insoluble addition polymer and a wax, the proportions of polymer and wax being 40 to 95 parts by weight of polymer to 5 to 60 parts by weight of wax; said aqueous medium also containing from 0 to 50% by weight, (based on the weight of polymer), of an alkali soluble resin; a dispersing agent; and, dissolved in said aqueous medium, a water-soluble calcium or magnesium compound providing in said medium at least 0.5% by weight based on the weight of the polymer, of calcium and/or magnesium ions. The description in relation to these ingredients is similar to that in Specification No. 1,072,044.
