Abstract

1,071,988. Disc brake automatic wear adjustment. D. W. JEFFRIES and H. W. NASH. Nov. 29, 1965, No. 50528/65. Heading F2E. A brake actuating cylinder and piston arrangement having wear adjustment is provided with an auxiliary piston which effects adjustment and with a resilient member to accommodate "knock-back." In the disc brake actuator shown the normal operating range of the piston is defined by the spring ring R<SP>1</SP> and the split ring F<SP>1</SP> embracing the piston 15. The auxiliary piston provided by the 0 ring P<SP>1</SP> experiences the operating pressure and advances the ring on the piston when the operating clearance is insufficient. Excessive clearance is adjusted by the piston slipping through the ring. The spring M accommodates "knock-back" of the piston 15 and returns it to its operating position. In another embodiment (Figs. 1 and 3, not shown) the split ring is embraced by a constriction ring of U section, portions (27) of the base of the U being bowed inwards to engage a recess in the periphery of the ring F. One flange of the constriction ring is deformed and provides the spring ring R<SP>1</SP>. In a second embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the split ring (F<SP>11</SP>) engages the cylinder wall and is attached to the piston by a central post (105) to which is attached the auxiliary piston (P<SP>11</SP>). The latter is connected to the piston by a collapsible bellows (103). A spring (M<SP>11</SP>) disposed between the auxiliary piston and the piston face accommodates shock forces on the piston. In a further embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) the auxiliary piston (F<SP>3</SP>-P<SP>3</SP>) is slidable through a clamp ring 117 to effect adjustment. In a final embodiment (Fig. 9, not shown) the auxiliary piston slides in a cylinder (140) attached to a main cylinder cover (133) and is connected to the slipping ring (F<SP>4</SP>) by way of a central pillar (137). A spring (M<SP>4</SP>) disposed centrally of the pivot accommodates shock loads. The disc brake comprises a disc 10 which may be splined on to the braked shaft, when a set of actuating pistons on one side only may be employed, as shown. If the disc is fixed a set of actuating pistons is provided on both sides.
