A pre-cast concrete unit for the construction of a refuse shoot in a multi-storey building comprises a tubular portion 1 arranged to form an axial section of the shoot, an inlet opening 10 leading through the wall of the tubular portion to provide access for rubbish to the shoot, and a pair of flanges which project outwards from the wall of the tubular portion adjacent one another and extend side by side substantially the full length of the unit so that, when the unit is mounted alongside a wall with the wall spanning between the free side edges of the flanges, a ventilation duct is formed along the outside of the tubular portion, at least one of the flanges having a slot in its free side edge which, in conjunction with the wall spanning between the free side edges of the flanges, forms a ventilating hole from the area surrounding the inlet opening through to the ventilation duct. As shown in plan view in Fig. 3, the unit may be provided with two pairs of flanges 2, 3 and 4, 5 arranged symmetrically on opposite sides of the tubular portion. The inlet opening (Fig. 2) may be in the form of a pre-cast concrete hopper 12 fitted with metal doors 13. The refuse shoot may be constructed by lifting a unit into position using eyes 14, 15, 16 and 17 embedded in its top surface, casting the next storey into the space between the top of the flanges and the top of the tubular portion, the eyes being thus embedded in the floor, and lifting a further unit into position, flexible pads being placed between adjacent units.
