Abstract

1,071,878. Screw-cutting lathe. WARNER & SWASEY CO. March 18, 1965 [June 4, 1964], No. 11525/65. Heading B3T. A screwing lathe 10, Fig. 1, comprises a bed 11, a head stock 12, a cross-slide tool turret 16, and a tool holder 21 guided by a bar 54b, and secured to a bar 23 which is slidable axially, and pivotable about its axis, in bearings 39, (26), secured to the bed. The bar, and therefore the tool, is moved axially during a screwing operation by a lead screw 42 which co-operates with a follower (43) carried by an arm 44, secured to bar 23. Arm 44 can be pivoted about bar (54b) to disengage the lead screw and follower, by a handle 48, Fig. 3 (not shown). Bar 23 is urged towards a stop 55, by a rod and spring (51), (52), Fig. 2 (not shown). A spring- urged roller (70), Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown), is carried in arm 44 and engages with a cam path 71, Figs. 2 and 4 (not shown), so that arm 44 is pivoted at the end of the screwing operation, to disengage lead screw and follower 42, 43, and allow the arm to be moved axially of the workpiece by spring (52). Spring (61) is compressed during the screwing operation and held in this position until the pivoting of arm 44 at the end of the operation by a latching means (81), (82).
