Abstract

1,071,584. Variable resistor. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Jan. 7, 1966, No. 842/66. Heading HIS. Spindle 9 is mounted rotatably between hollow spigot 6 and end cap 12 and carries on it a wiper 11 consisting of a thin conductive circular plate, punched in a four-pointed star shape at its centre and formed by bending to fit a square section next the end of the spindle, with an integral finger 37 which wipes an arcuate wire-wound resistance element 1 carried in a recess (16) (Fig. 6, not shown) in housing 2. Terminals connected to the ends of the resistive element 1 (13), (14) (Fig. 1, not shown) are held between it and the walls of the recess (16) in housing 2, retaining the element in its recess, and pass between housing 2 and end cap 12, which are slotted to accommodate them. A centre terminal 15 similarly passes between housing 2 and end cap 12 and contacts the rotating wiper 11. The housing 2, end cap 12 and spindle 9 are all of an insulating material, such as nylon. An integral ring (33) (Fig. 2, not shown) on the shaft of spindle 9 seals the body of the resistor and yet allows the spindle to be rotated with a low torque.
