Abstract

1,071,395. Valves. A. L. MILLER. July 6, 1964 [July 12, 1963; March 9, 1964], No. 27741/64. Heading F2V. A flow of fluid from air-inlet chamber 15, Fig. 1, to an outlet chamber 16 is controlled by a moving closure-member 26 actuated by a pair of rigidly-interconnected diaphragms 28, 32. The space between the diaphragms is open to atmosphere whilst the inner face of the lower diaphragm 28 is acted upon by the fluid in the inlet chamber 15; a chamber 39 above upper diaphragm 32 is connectable to a control pressure that may be the same as that in the inlet chamber 15 in which case diaphragm 32 is of larger effective-area than the lower diaphragm 28. Upon admitting control pressure to a pipe 49 it passes through a metering orifice to the chamber 39 and after a time delay, which is dependent upon the size of the orifice, sufficient pressure builds up to move the diaphragms and open the valve; the full opening is effected rapidly since the pressure in the inlet chamber falls quickly after the initial valve opening. When the control pressure is cut off the pressure in chamber 39 is speedily vented through a flap non-return valve 52 and the pipe 49, the valve 52 by-passing the metering orifice. Either one or both of the orifice and non-return valve may be dispensed with. If an independent control pressure is employed the diaphragm 32 may be of the same or smaller effective area than diaphragm 28, or it may be omitted altogether. In a modification, the control pressure also acts upon a further diaphragm (65, Fig. 4, not shown) which after the required time delay is lifted to open a spring-closed valve (84) through a leaf-spring (88) and since the valve (84) is in parallel with the orifice (54) to permit a free flow of fluid into the control chamber (64) and hence a rapid opening of the closure member 26. In another modification, the valve (101, Fig. 5, not shown) is formed on the boss of the upper diaphragm (32) which has a degree of lost motion relative to the lower diaphragm (28).
