Abstract

Water cured polyurethanes are prepared by reacting an organic compound (1) of M.W. at least 134 containing at least two active hydrogen-containing groups at least one of which is an -OH or -SH group with a stoichiometric excess of an organic polyisocyanate to form an -NCO terminated intermediate which is subsequently cured with water; from 1.5-60% of CaO being incorporated in the reaction mixture as a gas scavenger. The compound (1) may be a polyester or polyether polyol, e.g. a polyalkylene oxide addition product of propylene glycol, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, sorbitol or a mixture thereof. Polyfunctional amines may also be included, together with tertiary amine and organometallic catalysts.
