Abstract
1,071,363. Fuel elements. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. July 6, 1965 [July 7, 1964], No. 28708/65. Heading G6C. A plate-type fuel element comprises a fissile core 20 surrounded by a plate-shaped frame 12 having a hole 14 in which the core is received, the core is shallower than the hole 14 so that core cover plates 21, 22 fit flush with faces 16, 18 of the frame 12. Cover-plates 23, 24 may be added after the core cover-plates have been welded, and the whole assembly then roll bonded. The core can be a cermet of powdered aluminium and uranium oxide, with or without the addition of boron. The oxide may be UO 2 or U 3 O 8 .
