A two part clinical thermometer comprises (a) a heat collecting probe 13 having an aperture 14 at one end, and (b) an electric measuring device 10 comprising a thermistor 23<SP>1</SP> which fits into the probe aperture 14 when it is required to indicate the temperature of an object with which the probe 13 has been in contact. The probe 13 may be of plastics material and is dispensable after a single measurement, and may carry a metal insert 15 inside the aperture 14. At very high temperatures, a ceramic probe may be used. A simple transistor circuit measures the thermistor resistance, and the indicator is a microammeter.
