Abstract

Nitrogen, in the form of ammonia, is liberated from solid or liquid material in which nitrogen is bound as ammonium, urea, nitrate or nitrite by a process involving the reduction of the material or part thereof in alkaline solution by means of a Devarda alloy and/or the reaction of the material or part thereof with an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate, wherein the reaction when using Devarda alloy is performed in an amount of water not more than 5 times the weight of Devarda alloy plus sample on a water-free basis, or when using alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate in the absence of Devarda alloy, is performed in an amount of water not more than 40 times the weight of the sample on a water-free basis, and the ammonia evolved is expelled from the reaction vessel with the aid of a stream of inert gas via a mist trap maintained at a temperature exceeding 100 DEG C. All nitrogen present in the material may be liberated by reaction with Devarda's alloy and alkali preferably preheated to 40 DEG C., the heat needed being derived from the reaction of alkali and alloy. The material may be treated with an oxidant (e.g. sodium hypobromite) in the presence of NaOH or NaHCO3 to remove nitrogen bound to hydrogen (i.e. NH4 + and urea), the excess hypobromite removed by treatment with sodium sulphide and the residual material treated with Devarda's alloy to liberate nitrate- and nitrite-bound nitrogen. The ammonia liberated may be absorbed in water or acid and then titrated, thereby estimating the nitrogen content of the material.
