General arrangement.-Chocolate bars are wrapped individually, counted and divided into groups to produce packages containing a predetermined number of bars. In the form shown (Fig. 1), bars are fed from a conveyer 3 to one or more conveyers 4, under the control of a photo-cell 12 and are taken by conveyer 11 to a wrapping station 14 where they are conventionally wrapped. Means are included to automatically change rollers containing wrapping material. They are then lifted to a table 32), (Fig. 3, not shown) and moved forward (to the left in Fig. 3) by a gripper (34). The individual bars (31) are then swung by a device 17 (Fig. 1) through 90 degrees to a presser channel (36), (Fig. 7, not shown) where brushes (39) grip the bars and a resilient pawl holds the bars. Any air in the wrapper is removed and the folded and glued edges are pressed together. After counting the bars are batched and placed into cartons. Adjustable counting and batching device, filling cartons.-The bars are counted by an adjustable counter (67) (Fig. 9, not shown) and are then fed singly by an oscillating arm (70) along a curved shoot (69), lined with brushes. When a predetermined number have been fed in front of a piston (91) the counter causes the arm (70) to perform smaller strokes so that three bars are stored as shown in broken lines in Fig. 9 until the piston (91) has pushed the preceding batch into a carton (68).
