Abstract

1, 069, 680. Particle size distribution determination. HITACHI SEISAKUSHO KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Aug.21, 1964, No.34264/64. Heading G1A. To determine the particle size distribution of a powder the particles are suspended in a liquid and what is initially a homogeneous suspension 2 placed in a parallel-sided transparent-walled cell 2. At a time t after sedimentation has begun the suspension is scanned in the depth direction by a light source 3 and lens combination producing a thin beam of parallel light which is directed through the sample to photo-detector 4. From the scan is derived a photo-electric output voltage I and at each instant of the scan an equivalent voltage h from potentiometer circuit 5 representing the corresponding depth. The factors I, h and l are fed to computing circuits which determine and plot the particle size distribution curve. A mathematical explanation based on Stoke's Law, of two ways in which the computation may be performed is given.
