Abstract

1,069,405. Grinding wood. DEFIBRATOR A.B. May 28, 1964 [May 31, 1963], No. 22064/64. Heading B2A. [Also in Division D2] Wood pulp for making paper is obtained in high yield (85-95%) by heating wood chips under steam pressure at above 100‹C. for a time short enough to minimize or avoid discoloration, and then defibred in two steps between grinding members. The first defibration step is carried out in a defibrator at high pressure and temperature, the second in a refiner at an intermediate pressure and temperature and the pulp obtained is cooled by a rapid reduction of pressure. Chemicals that have a bleaching effect at the time of defibration or facilitate a subsequent bleaching are supplied in a solution or suspension to the chips just before they pass between the grinding member of the first ur each step. As shown, chips are passed through a cellfeeder 10 into a preheater 12, to which steam is supplied through a pipe 14. The heated chips are carried by a screw conveyer 22 to a disc grinder 28, chemicals being added at 36. The defibred material passes through the conduit 38 to the valve 40, where pressure is released. It is then further refined at a lower temperature in the second disc refiner 42, further chemicals being added through the line 50. In a modification, not shown, the shaft 23 of the conveyer 22 is hollow, and the first addition of chemicals is made through this hollow shaft.
