Abstract

1,068,944. Burners. CHEMETRON CORPORATION. Nov. 1, 1963 [Nov. 26, 1962], No. 43309/63. Heading F4T. A burner for gaseous, liquid, or pulverulent fuel comprises concentric black-iron pipes 11, 12, forming inner and outer chambers through either of which passes fuel and oxidizing gas respectively, the flow rate in the inner chamber being greater than that in the outer, the stream in the outer chamber being divided into circumferentially spaced portions by copper pipes 23 brazed in position and forming, in addition to their own circular-section flow passages, inner and outer triangular section passages 26, 50, whereby the stream is divided into portions lying at different radial distances from the central axis, whereby, on issuing from -the burner nozzle 21, the fuel and oxidant mix progressively over an extended axial distance. This results in quieter burning. As shown, oxygen, fluorine or air is fed to the inner chamber at the stuffing box end 44, and natural gas, hydrogen, propane, fuel oil, pitch, tar or pulverized coal to the outer at 35. A welded water jacket 10 with feed and return pipes 33, 31 is provided. The burner provides 25 million B.T.H. per hour and may be used to supplement the heat in open hearth and electric metallurgical furnaces. Flow rates are specified.
