Abstract

A siliceous coating composition dispersible in water comprises at least one water-soluble alkali silicate having a molar ratio SiO2/M2O of at least 3 wherein M is K or Na and a combined water content of at least 18% by weight, at least one filler and/or one pigment and at least one film-forming colloidal binder which is soluble in silicate solutions. The filler or pigment may be active e.g. ZnO, Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2, CaCO3 or metals such as Zn, Cu or Al, or inert e.g. earth, kaolin, talc, silica or titanium oxide. The binder may be an alkali polyacrylate or a polygalactomannan gum such as guar gum.
