Abstract
1,068,536. Suturing appliances. NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATEL 'SKY INSTITUTE EXPERIMENTAL 'NOI KHIRURGICHESKOIAPPARATURY I INSTRAMENTOV. April 30, 1964, No. 17947/64. Heading A5R. [Also in Division F2] A stapling device, for suturing with staples arranged in a row simultaneously, comprises a body member 1 carrying a staple anvil 2 and a slide 13 which is biassed towards the anvil by leaf springs 27, a staple magazine (43) and a staple punch 37 mounted on the slide, the punch being actuated by a lever 54 pivoted on the body member, means for adjusting the distance between the slide and the anvil according to the thickness of tissue to be sutured and clamps 7<1>, 10<1> for holding the tissue. The staple anvil 2 has a base plate 15 and transverse grooves 6, 9 located distally and proximally. An inverted U-shaped upper portion of the slide is hooked over a portion 11 of the frame. The staple magazine (43) having staple-receiving slots (47) arranged in a row transversely of the instrument is mounted on a pin 30 fixed to the slide. A sleeve on the pin may be turned by a handle (35, Figure 6, not shown) so that projections secure the magazine against movement relative to the slide. The staple punch 37, having along its lower edge projections corresponding to the slots in the magazine, has a forked upper end which is slidable on the pin. An operating lever 54 is pivoted on a pin 55 fixed to the frame 1 by a metal strip 56, its distal end extending through the slide and into a slot in the staple punch. When the instrument is not in use, a slidable plate 65, forming a safety catch, wedges the distal end of the lever against movement relative to the slide. The distance between the lower edge of the slide and the magazine from the anvil is adjusted by sliding the tapered end of a plate 24 under lower faces 23<1> of lateral projections at the upper end of the slide. In use, the tissue to be sutured is held in clamp jaws 7<1> located in the groove 6 or clamp jaws 10<1> located in the groove 9, the distance between the slide and the anvil then being adjusted to grip the tissue. After removal of the safety catch plate 65, the handle 3 and lever 54 are moved together at their proximal ends thus operating the punch to force staples into the tissue and against the anvil. The clamp jaws 7<1>, 10<1> are L-shaped and have notches or projections on their gripping faces.
