Abstract

1,068,322. Impedance measuring bridges. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Feb. 27, 1964 (March 27, 1963], No. 12062/63. Heading G1U. An impedance bridge comprises an oscillator 19, the output from which is connected by parallel paths to a detector 16, one path including the unknown impedance 21, and the other including a resistor chain 22, an amplifier 23 having a high input impedance and a low output impedance, and a standard impedance 24. The amplifier 23 prevents the standard impedance 24 shunting the resistance chain 22. For capacitance measurement, the setting of resistor 22 gives the value of the unknown capacitance, and the setting of resistor 26 gives the Q factor. Where Q is low <SP>1</SP>/Q, or tan d, is measured by replacing resistor 26 by a fixed resistor (27) and a potentiometer (28), Fig. 2 (not shown). Loss in the standard capacitor 24 may be compensated by bridging it with two series connected capacitors, and, earthing the junction of the two capacitors through a further resistor. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates measurement of inductance, the setting of a resistor (34) indicating Q. For measuring very high Q inductors, the modified amplifier output circuit of Fig. 5 is employed.
