A capacitor is manufactured by preparing a plurality of elements consisting of unfired ceramic wafers 10 having electrodes 12 on at least one face, stacking the elements and encapsulating the stack by surrounding it with ceramic powder or placing it between unelectroded ceramic wafers and pressing the powder or wafers. The encapsulated arrangement is then fired. Each capacitor element may be formed from a wafer of titanium dioxide covered by electrodes of platinum or palladium in paste form. These electrodes may extend around the edge of the wafer as shown in Fig. 6. A number of elements are assembled in a jig, with like electrodes adjacent, and surrounded by a titanium dioxide ceramic powder. Pressure is applied and the assembly is then fired in a furnace. Notches 42, 43 are cut into the sides of the unit and into the electrodes so that leads 40 and 41 may be connected by soldering (37 being an electrode solder layer). Alternatively the electrodes may cover only the central areas of the ceramic wafers, with small tabs extending to the edges to enable contacts to be made. After these elements have been stacked together several plain ceramic wafers are placed above and below the stack, and this arrangement is compressed, fired, notched to enable leads to reach the extending tabs, and otherwise treated as before.
