Abstract
Dichloro-cyanuric acid and its alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts are prepared by feeding a cooled aqueous solution of cyanuric acid and alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide in a molar ratio of 1 : 2 for the dichloro-cyanuric acid and 1 : 3 for the salts to a single chlorination column, feeding chlorine to the bottom of said column, cycling chlorinated solution from the bottom of the column to the top of the column, measuring the "redox" potential and the temperature of the reaction mixture, controlling the supply of either or both of the cooled aqueous solution or the chlorine in response to the measurement of "redox" potential to keep said potential within the range of from 1170-1170 mV for the dichloro-cyanuric acid or within the range 900-1000 mV and preferably 950 mV for its salts, controlling the temperature of the cooled aqueous solution in response to the temperature measured for the reaction mixture so as to maintain the temperature of the reaction mixture between 0 DEG and 16 DEG C., removing crystals of the product and the mother liquor from the top of the chlorination column and isolating the desired crystal product. Chlorine may be separated from the mother liquor, and fed to the bottom of the chlorination column. The "redox" potential and the temperature may be measured in the stream of reactants which is cycled around the chlorination column.
