Abstract

1,067,081. Reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 31, 1965 [March 31, 1964], No. 13208/64. Heading G6C. A reactor pressure vessel contains a core and a heat-exchanger; a wall spacedly surrounds the pressure vessel, the pressure vessel having a sleeve-like extension projecting towards the wall, there being a reactor coolant pump unit housed in the extension; provision is made for connecting the pump unit within and removing the pump unit from the extension by operations conducted from the outside of the wall; the wall includes an opening concentric with the extension. The pressure vessel 1 has a boss 24 to which is welded the extension 25. The wall 29, in conjunction with an inner wall 26, defines an annular space which is filled with shielding water. The extension 25 is sealed from the shielding space by bellows units 28 and 31. The pump unit comprises a watercooled electric motor 43, thermal insulation barrier 55, and a sleeve 48 containing a bearing 46 for a drive shaft 44 to an impeller 23. The pump unit is locked to the pressure vessel by a bayonet joint 49, 50 and by bolts passed through flanges 65, 66. Reactor coolant is allowed to leak through seal 58 to fill an annular space 52 in the thermal insulation barrier 55
