Abstract

A cis-1,4-polydiene of controlled molecular weight is made by polymerizing a 1,3-diene in anhydrous solution in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a compound of a metal of Group VIII of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table, an organo-metallic compound of aluminium, and a tertiary amine. The amine is present in an amount of up to 7 mole per cent based on the total amount of 1,3-diene, the compound of Group VIII, the aluminium organo-metallic compound, and the tertiary amine. Specified dienes are butadiene, and isoprene. The Group VIII compound may be cobaltous chloride, or nickel dichloride, the aluminium compound, triethyl-, tripropyl-, tri-butylaluminium, or aluminium diethyl chloride, and the amine, triethyl-, tripropyl-, tributyl-, trihexyl-, trioctyl-, tribenzylamine, dimethylaniline, N-methylmorpholine, or pyridine. The polymerization is generally effected in an inert hydrocarbon solvent. During polymerization an alcohol such as methyl alcohol may be present. The polymer is recovered by conventional techniques, e.g. addition of methanol and hydrochloric acid. Cis-1,4-polybutadiene of molecular weight 15,000-50,000, preferably 20,000, is obtained by the process.
