A grinding element 11 for a grinding wheel comprises an elongated bar of abrasive material, the grinding surface consisting of a bottom surface 12 having a portion 13 turned upwardly in sloping relation at least at one end and forming an outward continuation of the bottom surface. The grinding wheel consists of a disc 1 which is mounted on a shaft 2 and carries a plurality of the grinding elements at its periphery. A collar 7 is mounted on the disc and collects coolant from a pipe 9 for passage through orifices 10 to the grinding elements. Each element consists of a bar 11 of abrasive material, such as diamond, mounted in a holder 14 of plastic material, such as epoxy resin, from which extends a pair of screws for securing the holder to the disc. The holders may be mounted so that the bars of abrasive extend radially, or inclined to one side or the other of radial planes, of the disc. Each bar has a bottom surface 12 which may be in a plane normal to the axis of the wheel or somewhat inclined to the plane and a surface 13 which may be curved and is angularly disposed relative to the surface 12 to cut away the material of a slab, which may be stone or marble, above the plane of action of the surface 12. The elements may be moulded or secured by solder or cement in the holders and only the exposed portions of the elements may contain abrasive or the abrasive may extend into the holder which will wear down to expose the abrasive of the elements when the exposed portions of the elements have worn down. A plurality of elements may be mounted in a single holder. In a further embodiment, a pair of elements (21, Fig. 6) are mounted in a holder (19), the elements having slightly arcuate surfaces.
