Abstract

A method of coating wires, either in individual form or made up in strands or ropes, with an anticorrosive and lubricating layer comprises coating the wire under pressure e.g. using an annular device such as a drawing die or nips (split die), with a homogeneous dispersion of at least one finely divided metal or metal alloy in a resinous base comprising a phenol-formaldehyde condensation reaction product. The wire may be drawn using the homogenous dispersion as a drawing lubricant. The wire may be stranded using the homogeneus dispersion as a lubricant at the stranding point. The strands may be closed using the homogeneous dispersion as a lubricant in the closing operation. The strands may be closed around a fibrous core e.g. of steel, natural or synthetic fibre such as manilla, sisal, jute or hemp, which is first coated with the homogeneous dispersion. The finely divided metal may be zinc or a mixture or alloy of zinc and aluminium, e.g. a mixture of zinc and aluminium having a zinc to aluminium ratio of 5/95 to 95/5 or an alloy of zinc and aluminium having a zinc to aluminium ratio of 40/60 to 60/40 . The total metal content may be in the range 5 to 80% by weight of the combined weight of metal and resin. The metal or alloy may be in flake form and of particle size such as will pass a 300 mesh screen but not a 400 mesh e.g. a 325 mesh screen.ALSO:A method of coating wires, either in individual form or made up in strands or ropes, with an anticorrosive and lubricating layer comprises coating the wire under pressure e.g. using an annular device such as a drawing die or nips (split die), with a homogenous dispersion of at least one finely divided metal or metal alloy in a resinous base comprising a phenol-formaldehyde condensation reaction product. The strands may be closed using the homogeneous dispersion as a lubricant in the closing operation. The strands may be closed around a fibrous core e.g. of steel, natural or synthetic fibre such as manilla, sisal, jute or hemp, which is first coated with the homogeneous dispersion. The finely divided metal may be zinc or a mixture or alloy of zinc and aluminium e.g. a mixture of zinc and aluminium having a zinc to aluminium ratio of 5/95 to 95/5 or an alloy of zinc and aluminium having a zinc to aluminium ratio of 40/60 to 60/40 . The total metal content may be in the range 5 to 80% by weight of the combined weight of metal and resin. The metal or alloy may be in flake form and of particle size such as will pass a 300 mesh screen but not a 400 mesh e.g. a 325 mesh screen.
