Abstract

1,064,943. Measuring density electrically. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. Dec.13, 1963 [Nov.16, 1962(2); Feb.8, 1963], Nos.43436/62, 43438/62 and 5213/63. Heading G1N. [Also in Division G3] The density of loose solid material such as coal is measured by maintaining constant the volume thereof fed on to unit length of a conveyer 22, and measuring the weight per unit length. The output of an electrical load cell 29, measuring the weight, may be corrected for moisture content of the coal by a signal from a moisture gauge 27. The feed of material on to the conveyer is maintained constant by deriving an error signal e from a measured value of volume (7, Figs. 2, 4, not shown) and a preset value X, and using the signal e to control either the conveyer speed (15, Fig.4 not shown) or a vibrating feeder (5, Fig. 2 not shown). The level of the coal in the hopper (1, Fig. 3 not shown) may be measured (at 12) and kept constant by controlling (at 13) the conveyer speed, to maintain a constant volume on the conveyer irrespective of irregularities in the supply of material to the hopper. The volume per unit length may alternatively be determined by selection of the size and shape of aperture plates 26, Fig. 5.
