A support for vertically adjusting a manhole cover comprises a housing bearing a plurality of vertically spaced inwardly directed ledges 20 co-operating with an elevating member 21 having a plurality of sections retained with the housing in an expanded relationship. The ledges in the member 20, which may be integral with, or rest upon, the housing 10 are formed in arcuate members expanded by chordal right and left hand threaded screws. The elevating member 21 may be planar at the top or have a road surface material retaining flange 21. In a modification, in which the support is installed initially, the ledges are formed in the housing 10 and the elevatating member has only external complementary ledges expanded into those of the housing.
