Abstract

1,064,076. Electron multipliers; image intensifiers. MULLARD Ltd. Feb. 12, 1964, No. 17280/63. Heading HID. In a channel intensifier device comprising a matrix in the form of a plate having elongated channels extending through its thickness between input and output electrodes provided on the major surfaces of the plate, the inner surfaces of the channels being resistive and secondaryelectron-emissive, at least one of the electrodes is sub-divided into two sets of parallel interdigitated conductors with the conductors of each set connected to a separate terminal. By applying a potential difference between the two sets of conductors, and between these and the other electrode, electric accelerating fields, which are inclined to the channel axes, are set up within the channels, whereby electron multiplication occurs on one side only of each channel, so that the length-to-diameter ratio of the channels is less critical. As shown, each electrode is formed by two sets of interdigitated conductors, the potential difference between conductors E1a, E1b being variable and equal to that between conductors E2a, E2b. The materials, manufacture and uses of the device may be similar to those described in Specifications 1,064,072, 1,064,073 and 1,064,074. Alternatively, the device may be formed from flat strips and corrugated strips arranged alternately and bonded together to form a rigid channelled block, the side edges of only the flat strips being rendered conductive to provide the interdigitated conductors, Fig. 4 (not shown).
