Abstract

1,064,062. Winding on to bobbins; tension devices; stop motions. JERSEY-KAPWOOD Ltd. July 9, 1964 [April 19, 1963], No. 15474/ 63. Headings DID and D1J. Flat strip-like material 66 is wound on to a bobbin 14 by feeding the strip through a tension device 41, 42 and then over a stationary guide 38 on to a bobbin 14 that performs a reciprocating motion to traverse the strip thereon. As shown, the resulting package on the bobbin 14 is driven by a drum 13 of sponge rubber that reciprocates with the bobbin 14, the reciprocating motion being created by a piston and cylinder arrangement 21, 22. Adjustable switches 25, 26 enable the stroke length to be predetermined according to the length of the bobbin to be wound. The drum 13 and a length counter 32 are driven by a common motor 2 having an electromagnetic brake 3. Stop motions. Failure of the supply of strip material is sensed by a finger 53 pressing on the material leaving the tensioning fingers 41, 42; and a fork 63 senses any snarls or tangles of the material leaving a supply box 65. Operation of the finger 53 due to failure of supply, or operation of the fork 63 due to a tangle, or operation of the counter 32 on reaching a predetermined count, causes the motor 2 to stop and the electromagnetic brake 3 to be applied. The spacing between the fingers 41 and 42 is adjustable by means of a knurled screw 48. The guide rods 36 prevent lateral movement of the tape and the fingers 62 remove twists from the band as it is drawn upwardly. To commence a winding the ribbon end is stuck to the bobbin by adhesive tape. Modification. Duplicate guide rods, tensioning unit and tangle fork may be provided to enable two bands to be wound simultaneously on to the bobbin. The unit may be modified to wind on to a flat card instead of the bobbin 14. Photoelectric means may be included to detect faults, said detection being used to stop the machine or actuate a counter.
