Abstract

Styrene is polymerized by mixing with water, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate and a polymerization catalyst to form an emulsion, the catalyst comprising a mixture of a carbonyl compound of formula RCOR1, where R is alkyl, aryl or alkaryl and R1 is H or R, and a water-soluble free radical generating compound, and maintaining the emulsion at 15-100 DEG C. until at least 45% of the styrene has polymerized. The catalyst may be a mixture of (A) benzaldehyde or acetone and (B) sodium or potassium persulphate or hydrogen peroxide. The polystyrene may be recovered from the emulsion by coagulation with calcium chloride solution.
