Abstract

A refractory composition comprises dead burned magnesia in admixture with a small proportion of calcium oxide or calcium oxide precursor (e.g. 0.1 to 1.0% CaO by weight of the composition), the composition having a +72 B.S. mesh fraction and a - 72 B.S. mesh fraction which includes the added calcium oxide or precursor thereof with the result that the overall CaO : SiO2 molar ratio of the -72 mesh fraction is such that the fail temperature of a refractory brick made from the composition is at least 100 DEG C. higher than that of a refractory brick made from a composition when not containing the calcium oxide addition. The preferred overall CaO : SiO2 ratio of the -72 mesh fraction is not less than 3:1. The intrinsic content of SiO2 and CaO taken together, in the magnesia used preferably does not exceed 5% by weight on the weight of the composition. The magnesia used also has an MgO content of not less than 90% by weight and a total Al2O3 and Fe2O3 content of 6.5% or less, the overall CaO content of the refractory composition and the SiO2 content of the composition being such that the molar ratio CaO: SiO2 is between 2.0 and 4.2. The composition is used to produce refractory bricks for use in furnace linings, said bricks may be metal-clad.
