Abstract

A metallic golf club head is provided with an abrasive and/or friction coating bonded to it by means of an adhesive. If an abrasive coating is used the abrasive may comprise powdered silicon carbide, carborundum, silica, pumice, glass, garnet or emery, and is adhered to the driving face with an adhesive selected from the following epoxy resins, phenolic resins, epoxy/polysulphide rubbers, epoxy/phenolics, formal/phenolics, polyurethane, chlorinated rubbers, carboxylated rubbers and polyvinyl butyral. The abrasive coating is applied to the club head either by mixing the abrasive material with the adhesive material and applying it to the metal surface, or by coating the surface with an adhesive and dusting or pouring the abrasive on to the coated surface. If a friction coating is used, the coating is selected from polymeric compositions comprising compositions of natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, silicone rubber, neoprene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, nitrile rubber, carboxylated polymers, phenolic and epoxy resins with or without polysulphide rubbers, and polyvinyl formal or butyral resins with or without the addition of phenolic resins. The coating for the driving surface of the club head may alternatively comprise abrasive material embedded in an adhesive coating, in which case the coating material may be cast or moulded in sheet form, the sheet then being adhered to the driving surface. Preferably the surface of the club head is sand blasted and degreased with trichlorethylene before the coating is applied, and depending upon the coating material used, the coated club head may be heated to accelerate the curing of the coating material.ALSO:A golf club comprises a metal head the driving surface of which has bonded to it by means of adhesive a friction and/or abrasive coating. Specified friction coatings are polymeric compositions such as compositions of natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber, silicone rubber, neoprene, chlorosulphonated polyethylene, nitrile rubber, carboxylated polymers, phenolic and epoxy resins with or without polysulphide rubbers and polyvinyl formal or butyral resins with or without the addition of phenolic resins. The abrasive coating may comprise abrasive material embedded or adhered in an adhesive coating or a friction coating adhered to the driving surface of the head. Specified abrasive materials are powdered silicon carbide, carborundum, silica, pumice, glass and garnet. Specified adhesives are epoxy resins, phenolic resins, epoxy/polysulphide rubber compositions, epoxy/phenolic resin, polyurethanes, chlorinated rubber, carboxylated rubber, or polyvinyl formal or butyral/phenolic resin. Examples are given in which the application of an abrasive coating and a friction coating to a golf club head is illustrated.
